Jamie Shackleton was extremely impressive during his debut campaign in the Leeds United first-team.

Jamie Shackleton has told Leeds United’s official website that he would like to secure a regular starting spot in Marcelo Bielsa’s lineup during the coming campaign after returning to pre-season training at the start of the month.

It is almost remarkable to think that Shackleton went into last season still awaiting his senior debut. The 19-year-old was one of the surprises of the campaign as he made 21 appearances in the Championship.

What was so impressive about Shackleton’s form was that he was often asked to play in what had been an unfamiliar position of right-back. However, he never let the side down, and was outstanding when he was given the chance to play in central midfield for the play-off semi-final against Derby County.

The fans are now hoping to see the teenager get a run of games in his favoured position during the coming campaign. And Shackleton suggested that he is also hoping to become an even more important player.

“Hopefully I can build upon last season, when I came in last summer I was fit and wanted to give everything in training and that’s exactly how I’ll be this season,” he told the club’s official website.

“The aim is to get more game time, hopefully I can get a place in the starting XI, keep hold of it and play as much as possible throughout the year.”

While the supporters are convinced that Shackleton has an extremely bright future ahead of him, there appears to be every chance that he could still prove to be the surprise of the season for Leeds if his form towards the end of last term is a sign of what is to come.

Given how well he dealt with every challenge put in front of him, he certainly has the ability to establish himself as an important player as soon as next season.
