Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli should be walking into training with a confidence about him today.

Alli scored Tottenham’s equaliser against Watford at the weekend, as Spurs drew 1-1 with the Hornets.

Tottenham were way short of their best against Watford, but Alli’s goal was a positive to come from the match.

Alli has struggled at Tottenham throughout the season so far.

But Redknapp thinks that Alli needs to exude an air of confidence, and he should be walking into Hotspur Way with his swagger back now.

“Can he do better? Of course he can. It is not too harsh to suggest that, and I’m sure Alli realises that himself, too,” Redknapp said.

“I named the former MK Dons midfielder in my ’10 Premier League players to watch’ for this newspaper back in August.

Dele Alli of Tottenham during the Carabao Cup Third Round match between Tottenham Hotspur and Watford at Stadium mk on September 26, 2018 in Milton Keynes, England.

“I discussed how this kid is simply too good to go a season scoring just five goals in 25 games, which was what he managed in 2018-19. I called on him to become the ‘hunter’ rather than the ‘hunted’ and bring back his nasty streak.

“I stand by that. I felt this would be the biggest campaign of his young career. He had to silence the critics, and maybe his first goal of the season can be a launchpad for that.

“Too many have been quick to judge Alli and I hope Saturday can be the start of him showing us what he is all about. He should be walking into Tottenham’s training ground on Monday morning with a swagger about him, feeling ready to get to work.”

If Spurs can get Alli back to his best then it would be a major boost to Pochettino’s side.

Alli has proven himself to be one of the best goalscoring midfielders in the Premier League, but his form has slowed badly in recent years.

Alli has not got into double figures for goals in the league for two years now, after hitting the back of the net 18 times during the 2016/17 campaign.

The England international midfielder could now be in line for a run of starts for Spurs, with Pochettino’s side next in action in midweek when they take on Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League.
