Jamie Redknapp urges Tottenham to reward star players with better wages if they want to keep them

Mauricio Pochettino’s men have challenged for the Premier League title this season, but Redknapp fears they may struggle to hold onto their best players.

Jamie Redknapp has warned Tottenham that if they hope to keep hold of their best players, they need to start rewarding them with better wages, the London Evening Standard reports.

The London Evening Standard claims that no player in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad earns more than £100,000 a week, while the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham all have members of their respective squads earning over that amount.

And Redknapp has urged the Spurs hierarchy to start handing out more lucrative deals to their key men if they hope to avoid players becoming disgruntled over how much players at other clubs are earning in comparison.

“You have to change the mentality a bit and say, ‘Okay, we have got great players here but they are not going play for nothing and they have to be rewarded’,” he told the London Evening Standard. “Otherwise you could get a situation where they want to go.

“Guys like Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderweireld, they are top players who could get into most teams in Europe. There comes a time when you have to be rewarded and be on what you think you are worth. When you go to England camps and you know that X is on so much and Y is on so much and you are not, it can cause problems.”

While the London Evening Standard reports that Spurs booking a place in next season’s Champions League would see the club adopt a more relaxed wage structure that is paying amounts that would be closer to what would be expected from Europe’s bigger clubs, Redknapp’s point is fairly valid, especially if Pochettino’s men continue to contest for major honours but find themselves coming up that little bit short.

However, those who appear to have an attachment to the club – which appears to be most of the players in the current squad judging by the unity and harmony that there has been this season – are surely more likely to see the long-term benefit of staying at a club like Tottenham and be willing to stick around, even if that means accepting a slightly less lucrative deal than what they could get elsewhere.
