Pundit Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that he thinks West Ham United striker Andy Carroll needs to his head in order to avoid ‘silly red cards’.

The Hammers travelled to Burnley on Saturday afternoon in search of another three points having beaten Swansea City 1-0 at the London Stadium before the international break.

Slaven Bilic’s men took the lead against Burnley with Michail Antonio grabbing the opener, but things turned a little sour just moments later when Andy Carroll was sent off.

The giant striker was booked twice in quick succession having led with his elbow in two aerial challenges, with manager Bilic understandably frustrated with his striker’s rash behaviour.

West Ham looked to be hanging on for the win at Turf Moor, but were hit with a late equaliser as Chris Wood rose highest to head home Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s cross.

A point is better than nothing, certainly away from home, but there will be a sense of disappointment in the West Ham camp that they didn’t have 11 men on the pitch to try and see out the game.

Now, pundit Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that whilst Carroll’s aerial prowess is his main asset, he needs to use his head to avoid getting himself in trouble.

Redknapp added that Carroll cost West Ham the game, and will now have to sit out with a suspension; far from ideal given that the Hammers striker cannot afford to miss games after such a torrid injury record.

“We all know about Andy Carroll’s aerial prowess. Now he needs to use his head to avoid silly red cards like his dismissal at Turf Moor,” said Redknapp.

“What was Carroll thinking leading with his elbow twice in a matter of minutes? He not only cost West Ham two points but himself a game. Carroll has missed so much through injury that he cannot afford any needless suspensions,” he added.
