Jamie Redknapp believes Spurs should be targeting the Premier League title – and hailed Toby Alderweireld.

Pundit and former Spurs midfielder Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that he thinks Tottenham’s target should be to win the league this season.

Spurs laid down a marker in the title race as they beat everybody’s title favourites Manchester City on Sunday – and in comfortable fashion, too.

After Aleksandar Kolarov’s own goal, Dele Alli struck a second for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, and Erik Lamela could have made it even worse but had a penalty saved in the second half, meaning Spurs ran out 2-0 winners over the Premier League leaders.

Factor in that Tottenham were without star striker Harry Kane for Sunday’s clash, and it’s clear that Spurs are again looking to mount a charge for the Premier League title having fallen short last year.

Having ended Manchester City’s 100% winning start to the season under Pep Guardiola, Spurs have received plenty of plaudits for their performance – and Jamie Redknapp has offered his opinion on his former club.

Redknapp told the Daily Mail that he felt Spurs were ‘excellent’ against City, and believes their target should be to win the league this season having impressed so much on Sunday.

Redknapp added that Tottenham have the best defence in the Premier League, and thinks Toby Alderweireld – signed from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015 – has proven to be a real bargain for the club at just £11.5m. (The Independent)

“Tottenham were excellent — they should be looking at winning the league this season,” said Redknapp. “They came close in 2015-16 and nothing has really changed for them. They dismantled the favourites without Harry Kane and they have the best defence in the league, led by Toby Alderweireld who has proved superb value for money at £11.5million. I don’t think there’s anyone for them to be scared of,” he added.
