Pundit and former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that he thinks the Spurs central defenders will have been ‘delighted’ when Sunday’s defeat to Watford ended.

Tottenham headed to Vicarage Road having earned huge plaudits for their performance in the 3-0 win at Manchester United last Monday night, but they couldn’t repeat that display.

After a dismal first half, Spurs did take the lead after the break, as Lucas Moura’s cross was inadvertently diverted into his own net by Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.

However, that didn’t even spark Spurs into life, and Watford took advantage when Troy Deeney headed home a Jose Holebas free kick, and another set piece undid Spurs as Craig Cathcart scored from a corner to hand Watford a 2-1 win.

Watford’s 100% record continues but Tottenham’s is over, and the tepid nature of their performance will be of huge concern to Mauricio Pochettino after such a high against United.

The defending from set pieces simply wasn’t good enough, and Hornets striker Troy Deeney was able to bully Tottenham centre backs Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen.

Now, pundit and former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that he thinks the three Spurs centre backs simply ‘could not handle’ Deeney and will have been ‘delighted’ when the final whistle blew, as they will have been glad to see the back of Deeney.

“Tottenham’s three centre backs will have been delighted when the final whistle blew!” said Redknapp. “They found Deeney a complete nuisance. The Watford captain is strong as an ox, incredibly physical and wants to batter defenders. Those strikers have gone from the Premier League and Spurs could not handle him,” he added.
