Jamie Redknapp has told the official England podcast that he noticed the technique of Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips in the warm-up at Wembley yesterday.
Phillips was selected to start for England against Croatia, in a call which surprised many.
The Leeds man certainly justified his place though, as he put in a superb display on the Wembley pitch.
Phillips was a constant threat in a more advanced position, and Redknapp said that his technique was a joy to watch, even in the warm up.
“I was watching Kalvin get warmed up before the game, and watching how he strikes a ball, it’s so effortless,” Redknapp said.
“Not many players can do it. Some slap it, but he just caresses the ball. He looked so comfortable today.”

No shock at Elland Road
Phillips was the man who picked apart Croatia’s defence and set up England’s only goal of the game.
The Leeds midfielder slotted Raheem Sterling through to score, as Gareth Southgate’s side got off to a winning start.
Phillips’ display certainly raised his profile, although it would not have caused much shock at Elland Road.
The 25-year-old has been putting in performances of such a high quality for a consistent period at Leeds, that few at the Yorkshire club have ever doubted his quality.
The difference is that the world is now getting to see Phillips’ class.
And his performance yesterday has surely meant that he is now a nailed on starter for the Three Lions against Scotland on Friday.
