Jamie Redknapp praised Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno on Sky Sports Football (10:19pm, October 1, 2020) for his performance against Liverpool at Anfield.

The former Liverpool midfielder believes that Leno was “exceptional’ for the Gunners in their victory over the Reds away from home in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Thursday evening.

The 28-year-old Germany international made some superb saves during the 90 minutes, as it ended goalless in normal time.

Then during the penalty shootout, the former Bayer Leverkusen star made a crucial save, as Mikel Arteta’s side won 5-4.

Redknapp said about Leno on Sky Sports Football (10:19pm, October 1, 2020): “Their goalkeeper was exceptional today.”

Bernd Leno’s confidence

Meanwhile, Leno has said that he always knew that he was the first-choice goalkeeper at Arsenal.

The German missed the final weeks of last season due to injury, and Emiliano Martinez played well in his place.

However, Arsenal decided to sell the Argentine goalkeeper to Premier League rivals Aston Villa earlier this summer.

BBC Sport quotes Leno as saying: “The club has always given me the feeling I was the number one, I am the number one and will be the number one. My job is to prove it every week and I feel I have done that tonight.”

Given how well Leno played against Liverpool and his heroics during the penalty shootout, one suspects that Arsenal fans will be happy that manager Mikel Arteta decided to keep him as the number one goalkeeper.
