Jamie Redknapp has predicted that Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott could break into Jurgen Klopp’s senior squad on a regular basis this season.
The 17-year-old attacker joined the Reds from Fulham last summer but only managed six minutes of Premier League action during the 2019-20 campaign.
But with a solid pre-season campaign under his belt, which includes a place on the bench in their Community Shield defeat by Arsenal last month, Redknapp believes that the Liverpool boss will call on the teenager this season, claiming he could even replace Mo Salah when he isn’t available.
He told The Echo: “Harvey Elliott is a very special talent. He will be ready to push into the first team this season.
“If Mohamed Salah were to need a rest, then maybe Elliott could be given a chance. He’s another with great levels of talent and confidence. He looks a star in the making.”
Elliott scored in a friendly win at home to Blackpool last week, underlining his status as a rising star.
It was his first senior goal in a Liverpool shirt, despite the lack of competitive nature of the event, and hopefully it’ll give him the hunger to keep improving.
Even if he goes on to score in the Premier League this season, it’s imperative that he remains grounded.
Some massive talents have risen too high too soon and their development fizzled out, but Jurgen Klopp is a superb coach and man-manager, one who can hopefully continue to build Elliott’s confidence in a sustained way.
