Pundit Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that he thinks Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Tottenham’s Harry Kane with have a long-running rivalry for the Premier League Golden Boot.

Tottenham kicked off the Premier League weekend with a 4-0 thumping of Bournemouth, with Harry Kane notching the third goal, announcing his return to the side following a lay-off with an ankle injury.

Kane took his league tally for the season to 20 goals, but he still has some work to do in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot, with Romelu Lukaku still top of the rankings.

The Belgian international scored in Everton’s 3-1 home win over Burnley on Saturday afternoon to move on to 24 goals this season, keeping him top of the goalscoring charts.

Lukaku has played over 800 more minutes than Kane this season, given that the Spurs striker has suffered two major ankle injuries, yet just four goals separate them in the race for the Golden Boot.

With just over a month of the season left to go, both player will be gunning for the award, but Jamie Redknapp believes this is a battle that will extend far beyond the end of this term.

Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that he thinks Lukaku and Kane will have a ‘healthy rivalry’ over the coming years, with both 23-year-old strikers destined for the top of the Premier League scoring charts – should they stay there.

“The race for the Golden Boot is really hotting up with Romelu Lukaku leading the way with his 24th goal of the season,” said Redknapp. “That is an amazing return — now Lukaku needs to make sure the goals do not dry up as they did at the end of the last campaign when he failed to score in his final nine games of the season.”

“Wherever he is playing next season, Lukaku will be brimming with confidence should he win the Golden Boot. I can see him striking up a healthy rivalry with Harry Kane in the years ahead,” he added.

Lukaku’s future is in some doubt given that he recently snubbed the offer of a new contract at Goodison Park, but should he join another Premier League club, Lukaku v Kane will be a popular debate – and they should be favourites for the Golden Boot every year.
