The former Tottenham Hotspur star was wanted by Manchester United seven years ago, according to Jamie Redknapp.

When writing his regular column for the Daily Mail, Jamie Redknapp claimed that Manchester United tried to sign Luka Modric from Tottenham immediately after losing the Champions League final against Barcelona in 2011.

The Croatia international joined Spurs from Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2008, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £16.6 million, and he went on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders.

He then left north London for Madrid in the summer of 2012 for double the amount that Tottenham paid for him.

Modric has gone on to establish himself as arguably the best player in world football in his specific position, winning three Champions League titles with Los Blancos in the process.

Redknapp explained how he things could have been different for the Croatian, however, when writing his regular column for the Daily Mail, after Manchester United tried to sign him in 2011:

“The day after Manchester United lost to Barcelona in the Champions League final at Wembley in 2011, my dad received a call from Sir Alex Ferguson. He wanted to sign Luka Modric. Xavi and Iniesta had raised the bar for midfielders. The best had to be players who could take the ball off either foot, dribble and pass through the lines. Having seen just how impressive those two were against United, Sir Alex identified Modric as the player to take his team forward.”

No one will ever know what United could have gone on to achieve, had they signed Modric seven years ago, but it would have been no surprise to see them be more successful on all fronts, had they managed to snare the Croatian from Tottenham.
