Jamie Redknapp highlights Southampton’s goal scoring problems.

Four matches. Three goals scored. Four conceded. Stats don’t lie. It is clear as daylight where Southampton’s problem lie at the moment.

The Saints sacked Claude Puel for producing boring football, but things have hardly improved under new manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Popular football pundit Jamie Redknapp says that Southampton were so busy in trying to keep Virgil van Dijk this summer, they forgot to address their major problem, that is, bolstering the strike department.

Pellegrino’s side lost 2-0 against Watford in their last Premier League game, and were “absolutely embarrassing”, according to Dion Dublin.

They have failed to score in four of their last five games in all competitions, and that shows the problem is pretty serious.

Redknapp believes that the issue lies with the players. Southampton heavily rely on Italian striker Manolo Gabbiadini to fire, but he is struggling for goals as well.

After scoring six times in his first four games, he is struggling to match the standard he set for himself. Redknapp says that this has been a recurrent issue with Gabbiadini.

He adds that Southampton should have bolstered their attacking department in the summer. And having failed to do that, they are in danger of taking another backward step.

Manolo Gabbiadini of Italy looks on during the FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier between Spain and Italy at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on September 2, 2017 in Madrid, Spain.

“Southampton have been so hell-bent on trying to keep Virgil van Dijk that they have forgotten to address the real problems in their team,” Redknapp said to the Daily Mail.

“They sacked Claude Puel for producing boring football but under Mauricio Pellegrino they have failed to score in four of their five games in all competitions.

“The issue is clearly with the players. After scoring six times in his first four games, the goals have dried up for Manolo Gabbiadini. A similar thing happened to him at Napoli and Southampton should have looked to bolster their attack this summer. They are in danger of taking another backwards step.”
