Jamie Redknapp has told Sky Sports, during their coverage of Newcastle United’s match against Southampton, that he was impressed by Florian Lejeune’s display at St. Mary’s.

Lejeune has missed much of the season with injury, but he was brought back into Newcastle’s starting line-up by Rafael Benitez against Southampton.

The Spanish defender’s most notable action during the match was to give away a costly penalty, which provided Southampton a chance to score a crucial equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

But Redknapp claims that despite Lejeune’s error, he was still very impressed by the summer signing.

“He actually had a good game, Lejeune. I was impressed with him, he was composed, he headed every ball and that was just a poor decision,” Redknapp said.

“Shane Long just waits for him to make the challenge. He is never going to get that ball.

“I think he took a bit of a risk today by dropping Ciaran Clark because I think Lascelles and Clark look strong together.

“It was a clumsy challenge from Lejeune but I thought he looked very composed at the back until that point.”

Newcastle actually had the lead twice at St. Mary’s, but they were unable to hold on to claim the three points.

Whether Lejeune will now keep his place in Newcastle’s starting line-up remains to be seen.

The former Eibar man is in competition with Ciaran Clark for a place in Newcastle’s defence, alongside Jamaal Lascelles.

The Magpies’ next match comes against Crystal Palace at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
