Popular football pundit Jamie Redknapp says that Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic could be key to the club staying in the Premier League.
The Serbian attacker joined the Magpies in 2015 from Belgian club Anderlecht, but hasn’t been able to fulfil his true potential.
Mitrovic came on as a substitute and scored Newcastle’s third goal in the 3-0 victory against West Ham on Saturday. He also netted against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup.
However, he has struggled to nail down a starting place under Rafael Benitez, and it seems that the Spaniard doesn’t have full faith on his striker.
Mitrovic has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park this summer, but the 22-year-old insists that his head and heart are still with Newcastle.
Redknapp says that Mitrovic is a “battering ram” and a “brave forward”, but his stupidity outweighs his quality.
The former Liverpool midfielder and now Sky Sports pundit says that Mitrovic is “far too good” to not be in Newcastle’s team, but with him in the side, there’s always a risk involved.
“How do you solve a problem like Aleksandar Mitrovic?”, wrote Redknapp in his column for the Daily Mail. “He is far too good to not be in Newcastle’s team but for every moment of brilliance — such as his goal against West Ham — there is danger that he will get sent off.
“Mitrovic is a battering ram and a brave forward who will score goals. But his stupidity often outweighs his undoubted quality.
“There are some players who never learn but if Mitrovic gets his head right, he can be the key to Newcastle staying in the Premier League.”
