Jamie Redknapp shares honest opinion on Derby County boss Frank Lampard’s future

The Rams boss and Blues legend remains linked with a return to Stamford Bridge.

Jamie Redknapp has expressed his opinion on Chelsea’s reported interest in Derby County boss Frank Lampard, believing the Blues would be making a good move in bringing the club legend back to Stamford Bridge as manager (Sky Sports News).

Current Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is reportedly on the verge of joining Juventus, with multiple outlets including BBC Sport saying the Blues have agreed a deal in principle for their manager to join the Serie A champions which could be completed as early as Friday.

Lampard, who in his first season as Derby manager steered the Rams to the Championship playoff final, has long been linked with a switch to the dugout of his former club, with The Express saying the Pride Park outfit want £4million compensation for leaving with two years still on his contract.

The report adds that the fee in question will not be an obstacle, so it remains to be seen how the following few weeks – or days, even – will pan out regarding this managerial saga, but one thing is for sure – Lampard’s cousin and former England international Redknapp is a fan of the idea.

Redknapp, whose father Harry famously defended a young Lampard when his credentials as a player were questioned at a West Ham fan forum in the 1990s (The Independent), also believes Chelsea would be breaking fairly new ground in appointing an English manager.

“[Lampard] knows the game and obviously Jody Morris will come back with him if he does do that and Jody knows all the young players and will want to give those guys a chance,” he told Sky Sports News. “It would be interesting but the fans here would love one of their own. They have never gone for an English manager as far as I can remember.

“I think Frank would be a great choice but whatever they do, whoever it is, even if it’s not Frank, they will need to be patient. If you have lost Hazard, that’s a huge loss to any team, so the manager has got to be given time and the club have got to state from the start that this manager is going to be given a good couple of years to work his stuff.”
