Pundit Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that he loves how Son Heung-min is playing right now – but can’t agree that he should be in the six-man shortlist for Player of the Year.

Spurs claimed a narrow win over Newcastle United on Saturday, as the Magpies looked to be grinding out a 0-0 draw before Son popped up with a late winner.

That’s two goals in two games for Son since his return from international duty with South Korea at the AFC Asian Cup, and he continues to enjoy a stunning run.

That’s now nine goals and five assists in his last nine Premier League outings, with few players at Son’s level right now.

In fact, Son’s sensational performances have led to some calling for him to be in contention for the Player of the Year award.

Now, ex-Spurs man Redknapp has praised Son for the ‘season of his life’, hailing his workrate and his quality in front of goal – but can’t agree that he should be in the six-man shortlist for Player of the Year.

Redknapp instead named Harry Kane, Virgil Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Silva and Eden Hazard as the leading contenders ahead of Son, seemingly suggesting they’ve performed at a high level for more of the season than the South Korean has.

“Son Heung-Min is having the season of his life,” said Redknapp. “He has scored 10 Premier League goals from just 14 starts — including the winner in each of Tottenham’s last two games — and has helped take the burden off Harry Kane. His workrate cannot be questioned. Son made more sprints than any player on the pitch in both of Spurs’ games last week despite having recently flown back from the Asian Cup with South Korea.”

“He has stepped up and become a key player for Mauricio Pochettino. It is to his immense credit that he is being talked about as a player of the year contender. While Son is making a convincing case, he doesn’t quite get it into my six-man shortlist,” he added.
