Speaking to The Daily Mail, Jamie Redknapp has joked that Tottenham Hotspur ace Harry Kane consciously decides never to score in August, to give striking rivals a head start.

The 23-year-old striker has never scored for Tottenham in the month of August, out of 11 attempts.

That so-called curse was receiving attention before kickoff on Saturday when Kane kick-started his September in predictable fashion by scoring twice in the win at Everton.

In doing so, the England hitman reached the 100-goal mark for Spurs in 169 games, and Redknapp has joked that Kane – who has won the Golden Boot in the Premier League for the last two years running – purposely doesn’t score in the first month of the season to give other strikers a chance.

He said to The Mail: “I was delighted to see Harry Kane score his 100th goal for Tottenham — and with the way he reacted to the cross-shot which saw him reach the milestone.

“Many of those I played with would have tried to claim they were shooting, not crossing, but Kane remained refreshingly honest.

“Kane was on fire against Everton and it is obvious why he never scores in August — it’s to give everyone else a headstart!”

Kane’s record for the Lilywhites is, frankly, outstanding, and Spurs fans will hope he is firing on all cylinders again this week when Borussia Dortmund visit Wembley in their Champions League group-stage opener.

Tottenham haven’t won either of their two games at the national stadium so far this season.
