Jamie Redknapp has claimed to Sky Sports that Curtis Jones would’ve been a bit upset that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp used Harvey Elliott ahead of him early on.
The 20-year-old midfielder has arguably been Liverpool’s best player over the past few games.
With Elliott injured for the long term, Klopp has turned to Jones recently and the Reds’ academy star has grasped the opportunity with both hands.
Earlier in the season, it looked as if the Liverpool boss had chosen 18-year-old Elliott to be Gini Wijnaldum’s replacement on Merseyside.
And Redknapp feels that decision from Klopp would’ve annoyed Jones.
He told Sky Sports: “I’m a big fan of Curtis Jones, I love the way he plays. He can score goals, he’s got good energy, works hard for the team.
“In a way, his nose might have been put out of joint when Harvey Elliott was starting earlier in the season. He probably thought when Georginio Wijnaldum was going that this is a big opportunity for him but he’s had to wait. That injury to Elliott has given him a chance and he’s certainly taken it.”
Sunday is a massive opportunity for Jones.
Starring against Brentford and Porto is one thing, but if he can dominate a bigger game then it’s a huge sign of his progress.
And with Liverpool hosting Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday, they don’t come much bigger than this as far as domestic games go.
Someone of his talent and attitude could well dominate, too.
He has come so far in just under two years and few would be surprised to see him continuing to enhance his reputation with an eye-catching display against Pep Guardiola’s side.
