Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier’s place is under pressure, following the arrival of Victor Wanyama.

Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that he believes that Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier should become England captain, but he does have one worry about the midfielder.

With Wayne Rooney’s form proving to be a major concern, there is talk that England could be looking for a new skipper soon.

And Redknapp feels that Dier should be given the armband, providing he can hold off the challenge of Victor Wanyama back at Spurs, and retain his place in Mauricio Pochettino’s first team.

“I would say Eric Dier, although my only worry is that he is facing a battle with Victor Wanyama for his place at Tottenham,” Redknapp said. “The England captain needs to be in the form of his life for his club.”

Wanyama was brought to Spurs from Southampton last summer, and it was widely expected that he would have a back-up role to play.

Dier formed a brilliant partnership with Moussa Dembele in Tottenham’s midfield last term, and helped them mount a title push.

However, Wanyama has made a huge impact in his first few weeks at White Hart Lane, and Dier’s position in Spurs’ team is now under threat.

Dier still seems to be Tottenham’s first choice as their shielder in front of the defence, but with competition for places heating up, it remains to be seen whether he will retain his place in Pochettino’s first choice line-up for the entirety of the campaign.
