Jamie Redknapp has harshly claimed that Everton first teamer Dominic Calvert-Lewis is ‘on trial’ at the club because he has to ‘prove’ he is good enough to lead the line for the club next season.

The 22-year-old started for Marco Silva’s side as they deservedly beat Arsenal 1-0 in the Premier League on Sunday, with the Sky commentators awarding him the Man of the Match award.

Calvert-Lewin didn’t get on the scoresheet, but his non-stop work rate and movement off the ball did cause problems for the Gunners, who suffered yet another defeat on the road.

Nonetheless, speaking during Sky Sports Premier League’s coverage of the game(07/04/2019 at 1:55 pm), Redknapp claims Calvert-Lewin only has a short period of time to prove his worth to his manager.

“A lot of it is confidence [developing his goalscoring skills],” Redknapp told Sky Sports PL.”He’s not necessarily been on the red carpet with some of the younger players at an early age where you are always talking about them. He’s had to do it the hard way to a certain extent, but I like what he’s doing right now.

“As harsh as football is, he’s on trial right now. He’s got this short space of time to prove himself that he can become an Everton centre-forward. And if he does that, bags five or six goals until the end of the season it might change the manager’s mind. If not a new centre-forward probably will come in.”

Since Romelu Lukaku was sold to Manchester United in 2017, Everton have struggled to replace the powerful Belgian ace and, as a result, struggled to regularly find the back of the net.

Many players have tried, but no-one has been able to cement a regular starting birth, but Calvert-Lewin will be hoping to be the one who stands up and delivers.

There is no doubt that his lack of goals have not truly proven how valuable he has been to the Toffees in recent weeks as they have won three games on the bounce without conceding
