Tottenham Hotspur have struggled so far this season, following Kyle Walker’s departure.
Spurs sold Walker to Manchester City during the summer transfer window, and Redknapp admits that he initially felt Mauricio Pochettino’s side had done some good business.
However, as the season has progressed, Redknapp’s opinion has changed – with Spurs struggling to retain their place in the top four in the Premier League.
Tottenham are currently in sixth place in the top flight standings, after taking just five points from the last 18 available.
And Redknapp believes that Walker’s departure has distracted a number of Spurs’ key players.
“If Jose Mourinho was in that situation he’d be getting slaughtered, but for some reason with Spurs there is a question over should we really have a go at them,” he said.
“If you look at this season for Tottenham, aside from Real Madrid and Liverpool, it’s been really poor.
“I’ll be the first to hold my hands up and say I thought selling Walker was good business at first, but letting him go go was a huge mistake because what it’s done is it’s set a precedent. A lot of players there know what the going rate is now. Alderweireld, the best defender in the Premier League, not signed. Why would you not sign him? Give him whatever he wants!”
Redknapp also added that there is a ‘small club mentality’ at Tottenham which has not changed from his time as a player.
He said: “Tottenham have the opportunity of a lifetime right now. This is their chance. They have the players. They have players any team in the world would want, but it could so quickly slip through their fingers. Once one leaves like Kyle Walker it gives every player an out. It’s a small club mentality there. It’s not changed since I was there.”
Tottenham are next in action later this evening, when they take on APOEL Nicosia in the Champions League.
