Alderweireld is said to have asked Tottenham Hotspur for a new deal worth three times his current salary.

Jamie Redknapp has urged old club Tottenham Hotspur to pay Toby Alderweireld ‘whatever he wants’.

The Times reported last week that Alderweireld wants £150,000 a week to stay at Tottenham, who have so far refused to meet his demands.

According to the Times, the Belgian centre-back earns £50,000 a week at Spurs, which is £130,000 less than what Virgil van Dijk is getting at Liverpool.

And the newspaper added that this has only increased Alderweireld’s frustration.

Asked by Sky Sports colleague Jeff Stelling whether Tottenham should pay Alderweireld his £150,000 a week or let him go , Redknapp said: “I’d give him £180,000. That’s what I’d do. I’d give him whatever he wants. If he was at any other club – Man City – they’d pay him and he’d be happy.

“He is one of the best defenders in the world, he could go anywhere right now. If he wants £150,000 [and] you’re worried you’re going to upset the wage structure at the club, I just don’t feel that’s a big club mentality.

“They’ve got a special talent there, he’s a leader and when he plays the points are better, they concede less goals. Why are they not paying up? Give him what he wants.”

Tottenham talisman Harry Kane is understood to be the north London side’s highest earning player, taking home £110,000 a week according to the Sun.

And meeting Alderweireld’s demands risks prompting other Spurs players to seek significant increases to their own salaries.

The former Ajax player turns 29 next week, which could act as another deterrent for his current employers, whose squad is among the youngest in the Premier League.

How should Tottenham respond to Alderweireld’s alleged demands?
