Speaking to Sky Sports, Jamie Redknapp has said Liverpool are lacking a vital element in their midfield; a defensive midfielder.

The Reds have had an indifferent start to the season as they shone in the win over Arsenal but were poor in defeat to Burnley last weekend.

That game saw captain Jordan Henderson play in a defensive midfield role and struggle, with many criticising his performance following the 2-0 loss to Sean Dyche’s side.

That defeat once again highlighted the defensive deficiencies in this current squad and Redknapp has now claimed that much of the blame can be put on the lack of a defensive midfielder in their team.

“Liverpool are missing a vital element in their midfield,” he told Sky Sports.

“They don’t have a defensively-minded player in the middle of the park. Without that player protecting the defence you end up with the kind of ‘shock’ results we’ve seen Liverpool experience.”

While Redknapp believes Liverpool are lacking a defensive midfielder, it is likely that Jurgen Klopp is hoping to see Emre Can fill the role.

The German has impressed since arriving at Anfield and like several other stars has developed greatly under Klopp since he took charge.

His presence has been sorely missed at the beginning of this season and there is every chance he will be making a return for the trip to White Hart Lane in an attempt to fix their defensive issues.
