Survival does not mask what has been another torrid season for West Ham on and off the pitch and supporters want big changes from unpopular co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold if not a change of ownership altogether.

The Hammers have been in disarray this season and supporters are furious over what they feel are a string of broken promises regarding ambition, transfer spending and the much-heralded move to the London Stadium.

Their anger was highlighted by the protests which spilled onto the pitch during the 3-0 home defeat to Burnley in March.

More than 52,000 fans shelled out for season tickets in the first two seasons at the London Stadium – second only to Manchester United.

West Ham United owners David Sullivan and David Gold look on prior to the Premier League match between Burnley and West Ham United at Turf Moor on May 21, 2017 in Burnley, England.

But the vast majority of them are disillusioned with the club.

Speaking on Sky Sports, former Hammers striker and boyhood West Ham fan Teddy Sheringham and pundit Jamie Redknapp – son of ex West Ham player and manager Harry – have left Sullivan and Gold in no doubt what they need to do to get fans back onside.

“You’ve got to give him (the manager) a chance, I mean looking at their net spend (of £7 million), you’ve got to give him a chance to succeed,” Sheringham told Sky Sports.

“You’ve got to give him big players, this is a big football club, and they want to see big footballers play at this stadium, but you’ve got to give them a chance, you’ve got to give them more money and a chance to win games.”

Redknapp agreed with his former England teammate and said recruitment is as if not more important to getting West Ham fans back onside.

“West Ham have always had those sort of (great) players going back years, they’ve always had a (Paolo) Di Canio who can light up the place or even a (Dimitri) Payet just a few years ago,” Redknapp said.

“One of the reasons why the atmosphere has not been that great here it’s not because at times this stadium is uncomfortable to be in, it’s because the level of quality has not been that good.

“You create a good atmosphere by playing well, by getting the crowd on the edge of their seat, by making 50-50 tackles, all the fundamentals that you need to be a successful team.

“By spending £7million net spend, that’s difficult, you can’t turn water to wine, it needs money to do that. I think in the summer as important to get the manager is to get better players into the place as well.”
