Andre Gomes has made a fantastic start to life on loan at Everton, and the Toffees have been encouraged to start looking into a permanent deal now.

Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp both suggested during Sky Sports’ live coverage of the Merseyside derby (02/12 from 16:00) that Everton should get on with trying to make Andre Gomes’ loan permanent as soon as possible, with the latter insisting that he was the Toffees’ best player at Anfield.

Divock Origi ensured that it was an agonising afternoon for Marco Silva’s men. The defeat was all the more crushing given how much better the Toffees were than when they visited their local rivals last season.

One of the players who will leave with his head held high was Gomes. The Portugal international continued his superb start to life at Goodison Park with an excellent performance in the defeat.

He has been a remarkable signing, and that has prompted Redknapp to urge Everton to get in contact with Barcelona immediately in an attempt to try and agree a permanent move.

“This man on the ball’s made such a difference to Everton at the start of the season. The only problem is the better he plays, the more expensive he’ll be,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“I’d get him signed up. I’d be negotiating right now. He is some talent. He’s made for the Premier League. He’s cool, calm, composed; super player, and not an easy atmosphere as well. He’s been the best player for Everton,” Redknapp added.

It would be a fantastic statement from Everton if they managed to agree a deal to keep Gomes permanently. As Carragher noted, his stock seems to be rising with every appearance he makes.

And keeping him for the long-term would be another superb piece of business from the Toffees after what has proved to be a much better spell in the transfer market.
