Bristol City winger Jamie Paterson has criticised his former Nottingham Forest bosses in an interview with the Bristol Post.

Paterson swapped the City Ground for Ashton Gate at the end of August and almost marked his Robins debut with the winning goal against Rotherham United, only for his shot to cannon off the post.

Already, the 24-year-old is enjoying the freedom afforded to him by new manager Lee Johnson, after feeling restricted at Forest.

“Playing with freedom comes from the manager,” said Paterson, who was brought to Forest by Billy Davies and also played under Stuart Pearce, Dougie Freedman and Philippe Montanier on Trentside.

“Lee Johnson is one of those who always wants you to express yourself. When you have that kind of encouragement, your natural instincts come out a lot more.

“When you have a manager who does not like you doing that, it kills your game. I don’t want to name any names, but I had that at Nottingham Forest.

“When you play for somebody who wants you to be creative, it makes such a difference. Different managers have different opinions.

“I had it last season at Huddersfield [for whom he played on loan] and it was important for me that I was able to come to a club where I could play my own brand of football. I’m looking forward to doing that.”

Paterson impressed with the Terriers last season, scoring eight goals and making another five.

However, despite scoring and assisting in two League Cup appearances this term, he failed to break into the league plans of new boss Montanier.

Paterson’s sale came a mere 24 hours before the departure of fellow winger Oliver Burke from Forest to RB Leipzig, following weeks of speculation.

In total, the former Walsall player scored 14 goals and assisted 15 in 69 Reds appearances.
