Jamie Murphy praises Rangers January signing Russell Martin

Glasgow Rangers defender Russell Martin has impressed since arriving at Ibrox during the January transfer window.

In comments reported by the Daily Record, Jamie Murphy has suggested that it has become clear why Russell Martin had been a captain for Norwich City following the impact that he has made since joining Rangers.

Like Murphy, Martin arrived at Ibrox on loan during the January transfer window. And also like the winger, the centre-back has taken little time to establish himself as an important player within the squad.

The Scotland international has played regularly alongside David Bates at the heart of the defence, and made an impact at the other end of the pitch during Saturday’s Scottish Premiership clash with Hearts as he scored the Gers’ second goal – Murphy bagged the first – as they moved themselves three points clear of Aberdeen in second.

And Murphy was full of praise for his fellow goalscorer when describing the impact that he has made since joining the Gers last month.

“He is a nice guy and he has come in and done great for us. He has got captain-like qualities. You can see why he was a captain at Norwich and he adds to the dressing room,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record.

While Martin’s future appears to be uncertain, it is undoubtedly fair to say that he appears to be having an extremely positive impression on Bates’ form, with the youngster looking very impressive since being paired with the 32-year-old.

And while Graeme Murty has a host of centre-backs to pick from, and that may leave a number of Rangers fans wondering whether the club will make a considerable effort to try and get Martin in permanently at the end of his loan spell, it certainly appears after his first few weeks with the Gers that he is a player that the side should be discussing during the summer transfer window.
