Rangers new boy Jamie Murphy has reflected on his first Ibrox goal.
Rangers winger Jamie Murphy has told The Scottish Sun that he grew up admiring Gers heroes Brian Laudrup and Paul Gascoigne as he reflects on a dream Ibrox goal.
The Gers beat Hearts 2-0 at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon to make it five wins in the last six league games, with Murphy and Russell Martin both on the scoresheet against Hearts.
That’s now three goals in three games for new signing Murphy, who is really starting to show his class following a January loan move from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.
The 28-year-old was sensational in the 5-3 win over Hamilton Academical earlier this month having notched a goal and two assists, and his goal against Hearts was particularly special.
Murphy collected the ball from a Greg Docherty pass inside the penalty area, then danced his way through the Hearts defence and around Jon McLaughlin before tapping home to cap off a fine solo strike.
The winger will now be hoping to build on that goal with more magical moments for his boyhood club, and he has reflected on a special first goal at Ibrox.
Speaking to The Scottish Sun, Murphy has admitted that he has dreamed of scoring such superb goals for the club he grew up supporting, following in the footsteps of players who have been special talents at Ibrox.
Murphy noted that he loved Paul Gascoigne, but his biggest Ibrox hero was Brian Laudrup, and he feels lucky to finally be playing for Rangers and taking his chance to try and emulate their feats.
“You do dream of goals when you’re younger and watching the team,” said Murphy. You don’t dream of scoring goals from half a yard that hit off you and go in. You dream of scoring good goals. I’m delighted either way, whether it was a scuff or a good finish. I’ll take it. There has been many a great player over the years to have scored here. Brian Laudrup was my biggest hero. Paul Gascoigne was another.”
“But Laudrup was the first person I remember starting to watch and admire. It’s special to follow in their footsteps. I’m lucky enough to be playing here and doing well. I never got the chance to meet Gazza when he was up a few weeks ago. A few of the boys said he was in the changing room before we came down for pre-match. So I missed him. Maybe next time. I’ve never met Laudrup either. I just watched from afar,” he added.
