Rangers are reportedly keen on signing Brighton winger Jamie Murphy.

According to Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre on Monday afternoon, Rangers are in the race to sign Brighton and Hove Albion winger Jamie Murphy.

The Gers have brought in nine new faces this summer, with Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Ryan Jack, Carlos Pena, Graham Dorrans, Dalcio, Daniel Candeias, Alfredo Morelos and Eduardo Herrera all arriving.

Yet, having been dumped out of the Europa League qualifiers by Luxembourg’s Progres Niederkorn earlier this month, Rangers are still in need of new additions, with another winger to be targeted.

Candeias and Dalcio arrive with no experience of playing in Scotland, and with Barrie McKay sold to Nottingham Forest, another winger is required – and Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre claimed on Monday that the Gers want Brighton’s Jamie Murphy.

Murphy, 27, has hit ten goals in 79 games for Brighton since joining from Sheffield United in 2015, having previously notched 21 goals in 121 games for the Blades.

The Scot thrived with Motherwell having hit 50 goals in 215 appearances, and it was during his time at Fir Park that Murphy was linked with a move to Rangers.

Murphy’s former team-mate Bob Malcolm told the Glasgow Evening Times in November 2012 that the winger is a boyhood Rangers fan, and would have considered dropping into the lower leagues to play for the club he has supported for years.

Murphy is again being linked with a move to Ibrox, but with the report claiming that Brighton want £4million for his signature, and that may just be beyond that Rangers can afford right now without Europa League football to bank on.

As noted by Transfermarkt, Rangers have spent over £7million on new signings already this summer, and taking that spending to more than £10million seems almost impossible right now – no matter how perfect Murphy may be for the Rangers attack, meaning that his dream move to Ibrox could be scuppered.
