Speaking to The Glasgow Evening Times, Jamie Murphy has hailed Rangers team-mate Jason Cummings and labelled him a “top player”.

Both players have hit the ground running since joining the Gers in loan deals this past January.

Cummings, who signed on loan from Nottingham Forest, has bagged five goals in five starts for the Ibrox side – including a hat-trick at Falkirk earlier this month.

Consequence of their form, both the 22-year-old and Murphy – who has three goals and five assists since joining from Brighton – were called up to Alex McLeish’s latest Scotland squad for friendlies later this month.

Cummings has a reputation as being a bit of a joker, but his compatriot claims that the red-hot striker knows when to shelve his antics and focus on more serious matters.

He told The Glasgow Evening Times: “He is a good guy and he is always having a bit of fun and enjoying himself but he is serious when it matters.

“There are a lot of players like that, you only see one side and you think they are the same when they are on the park.

“That is not the case with Jason. He is a good guy and when it gets down to the serious business he is a top player.”

Rangers fans will be desperate to see both return from international duty unharmed.

The Gers’ Premiership season is effectively over, with Graeme Murty’s side scrapping for second place with Aberdeen, but they can still win the Scottish Cup.

On April 15, Rangers and Old Firm rivals Celtic do battle at Hampden Park in a semi-final clash, and Murty’s troops have a much better chance if the two Scottish lads are available.
