Jamie Carragher tips Man City to ask Liverpool star ‘questions’ he’s yet to answer

Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher has tipped Manchester City to ask Alexis Mac Allister ‘questions’ that the Reds midfielder is yet to answer in their top-of-the-table contest.

The Anfield natives hit the road to Etihad Stadium for the Saturday lunchtime kick-off. Jurgen Klopp will put Liverpool atop the Premier League table with a win over Manchester City. Just a point is currently between his Merseyside team and Pep Guardiola’s defending champions.

Liverpool signing Mac Allister in a bargain transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion this summer has helped toward their standing. The Argentine 2022 World Cup winner quit the Seagulls in June for just £35m, rising to £55m. Anfield chiefs triggered a release clause in his contract.

Mac Allister has been essential since joining Liverpool from Brighton

Mac Allister has started in 11 of Liverpool’s 12 Premier League fixtures so far this season. He has missed just one of the Reds’ top-flight games after having to sit out the 3-0 win at home to Brentford. The 24-year-old was suspended having received his fifth yellow card this term.

But Klopp can welcome Mac Allister back into the Liverpool line-up at Manchester City. The German has entrusted the 23-cap Argentine with playing 885 Premier League minutes from the potential 990 available to him. Yet Carragher feels he faces a new challenge on Saturday.

Carragher expects Manchester City to be an ‘acid test’ for Mac Allister

Carragher has now told Sky Sports that while he appreciates what Mac Allister has added to the Liverpool line-up, he senses their trip to Manchester City will be an ‘acid test’ for the 24-year-old. The Reds hero firmly believes Guardiola’s side will present ideas he is yet to tackle.

Mac Allister has impressed Carragher since arriving at Anfield with his talent to get Liverpool ‘moving’. He has been essential to how Klopp wants the Merseyside natives to move the ball and combine on the pitch. But Carragher claims Manchester City’s quality is unique, noting:

“He’ll certainly be asked questions that he hasn’t been asked before in a Liverpool shirt with the quality of Manchester City and the players they have around them and how quickly they can counter-attack, as well. So, this is going to be the sort of acid test for him in that role.”
