Everton have spent big to bring in Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City.

Jamie Carragher has suggested that Everton should have bought a striker with the money they spent on Gylfi Sigurdsson on Monday Night Football, which was broadcast on Sky Sports on 21st August.

Everton signed Sigurdsson for a fee of £45 million from Swansea, as BBC Sport valued, with the Icelandic international becoming the Toffees’ record signing.

Sigurdsson is expected to play a key role at Goodison Park, but Carragher feels that Everton should have prioritised buying a new striker.

“The money they spent on Sigurdsson, I thought they should have spent on a centre-forward,” the former Liverpool man said.

Everton are still after a forward, following the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United earlier this summer.

Lukaku scored the bulk of the Toffees’ goal last term, and replacing the target-man looks a tough task.

Ronald Koeman confirmed that he hoped that his side would not stop spending after Everton’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City last night.

In the contest, Wayne Rooney scored Everton’s goal – with youngster Dominic Calvert-Lewin leading the line.

Everton have most recently been linked with Arsenal forward Lucas Perez, as Koeman searches for a new forward, in Bleacher Report.
