Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was linked with a move to Premier League rivals Everton in the summer.

Jamie Carragher has told Monday Night Football Extra, as reported by Sky Sports, that Olivier Giroud is one of the most underrated players in the Premier League, and suggested that he would have been ideal for Everton.

Sky Sports reports that Giroud was linked with a move to Goodison Park during the summer, and the 31-year-old has since told RMC Sport that he was close to joining the Toffees before ultimately opting to stay at Arsenal.

And Carragher suggested that it was a major blow for Ronald Koeman to not be able to sign the former Montpellier man in the window as he would have been the perfect player to have in the squad.

“I think he is one of the most underrated players in the Premier League,” he told Monday Night Football Extra, as reported by Sky Sports.

Ronald Koeman, Manager of Everton looks on ahead of the Premier League match between Brighton and Hove Albion and Everton at Amex Stadium on October 15, 2017 in Brighton, England.

“He scores goals and he gives you that presence. He was France’s number one striker at Euro 2016 and, given the quality that they have, that shows he is a really good player. He would have been a great signing for Everton.”

With eight games gone in the season so far, it is undoubtedly fair to say that not signing another striker along with Wayne Rooney and Sandro Ramirez in the wake of Romelu Lukaku’s departure has proved costly for the Toffees.

Everton are just two points and two places above the bottom three in the Premier League, and have scored just five times in the top flight, leaving them 24 goals adrift of the tally current league leaders Manchester City have amassed.

Giroud has endured a frustrating season as he still awaits his first league start of the campaign, but he has still scored in the league this term. And with 70 Premier League goals under his belt since he arrived at the Emirates, Everton fans would certainly be forgiven for wishing he had decided to head to Goodison Park in the summer.
