Tottenham Hotspur have made an extremely slow start to the current campaign.

Jamie Carragher looks on before the UEFA Champions League group H match between Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium on November 1, 2017 in London, United Kingdom.

Jamie Carragher has suggested to Sky Sports News, on 27th October, that Tottenham Hotspur should have refreshed their squad by cashing in on a key player and signing Gareth Bale.

Spurs’s squad has a familiar feel to it, with many of their players being at the club for years.

Tottenham have got close to winning multiple trophies over that time, but they have never quite got over the line.

Spurs’s lack of change has arguably been one of the reasons for their struggles so far this season.

And Carragher has suggested that Tottenham should have shown more willingness to change, as he feels that the return of Bale could have really pushed them to another level.

“If you look at the Tottenham from two years ago, when they beat Liverpool 4-1, it’s exactly the same team now with Ndombele the only new signing they made,” he said.

“Could they have refreshed it by cashing in on someone, rather than just keeping all the same players?

“They have been brilliant for years, but not quite good enough to make that step. Would Gareth Bale, if he had come back to Tottenham? A special player or two to make that difference.”

Bale, who left Spurs for £86 million back in 2013 (Guardian), has been linked with a return on numerous occasions, but the club do not seem to have really pushed to make the signing.

Tottenham have been linked with other big names over that time, and were close to signing Paulo Dybala in the summer, but the deal fell through at the very last minute.

Whether Spurs will now be very active in January remains to be seen, as Mauricio Pochettino’s look to recover from a poor start this campaign.

Tottenham have taken just 12 points from their opening 10 games this season, and currently sit in 11th place in the Premier League table.
