Jamie Carragher has suggested that Everton made a mistake during the summer transfer window.

Jamie Carragher of England looks on during the International U17 Friendly match between England U17 and Germany U17 at the New York Stadium on November 20, 2015 in Rotherham, England.

Jamie Carragher has told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports (broadcast on 11th September 2017 from 19:00 pm) that he feels that Everton now have a huge problem, having failed to add more depth up front during the summer transfer window.

The Toffees were one of the busiest sides during the window, comfortably reaching double figures for the number of new faces that they brought in.

But despite losing Romelu Lukaku, Everton failed to land a marquee forward. Wayne Rooney and Sandro Ramirez both came in, but neither arrive with the kind of strike-rate that Lukaku achieved during his time at Goodison Park.

And after watching Ronald Koeman’s side lose 3-0 at home to Tottenham at the weekend, Carragher suggested that it is beginning to look like a major mistake from Everton to not sign a prolific goalscorer.

“I know people who were at the game, speaking to Everton fans afterwards, they were very disappointed with how they performed,” he told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.

“I think there is definitely a problem at centre-forward for Everton, a huge problem. I said that when they signed Sigurdsson, I think he’s a good player but centre-forwards are what they needed more than anything.”

Though Rooney has made a promising start to life back at Everton – scoring twice in the top flight – and the Toffees have faced a couple of tricky fixtures already in Manchester City, Chelsea and Spurs, there is no question that the early signs hint that their lack of depth in that area of the pitch is proving costly.

Rooney is the only player to score for Koeman’s side in the Premier League this term, and the bottom two sides in the division – who have both lost all four of their fixtures so far – are the only teams to have scored on fewer occasions.
