Sunderland fought off interest from Everton to keep hold of Lamine Kone.
Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports Monday Night Football, which was broadcast on 12th September, that David Moyes needs to build his team around the talents of Lamine Kone.
Sunderland fought to keep hold of Kone over the summer, with Everton strongly pursuing the defender.
The fact that Kone remains part of Sunderland’s squad is a major boost for Moyes, and Carragher feels that the powerful centre-back will be key.
“He’s got to build around Kone. He’s massive,” Carragher said. “If David Moyes and Sunderland are going to stay in this league it’s going to have to be on the back of clean sheets, and he has something to build on there.”
Despite Carragher’s positive words, it seems that Sunderland have a lot of work to do defensively if they are to stay up.
The Black Cats are yet to win a match this season in the Premier League, and they were heavily beaten yesterday by Everton.
The Toffees ran out 3-0 winners at the Stadium of Light, with Romelu Lukaku scoring a second half hat-trick.
Sunderland were all at sea at the back, with Kone’s display falling short of his usual high standards.
Moyes’ side are next in action at the weekend, when they take on an unbeaten Tottenham Hotspur side at White Hart Lane.
