Jamie Carragher slammed Virgil van Dijk for being ‘too arrogant’ during Liverpool’s thrilling Premier League contest against Leeds on Saturday, as he told Sky Sports PL (12/09/20, 5 pm start)
Van Dijk made a mistake for Leeds United’s second goal and Carragher felt that the world-renowned Dutchman was acting like the game was ‘too easy’ for him because his team were coming up against a newly-promoted side.
In an end-to-end 4-3 game, Van Dijk attempted to flick the ball behind him after trying to deal with a ball over the top, but he only ended up putting the ball on a plate for Patrick Bamford, who went through on goal and slotted home to make the game 2-2, at the time.
Van Dijk is regarded as one of the best defenders in the world, so when he makes a mistake it’s going to make headlines and this is what Carragher thought of his error.
“Allison was not happy,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “He [Bamford] gets in between the centre-back [Van Dijk and Andy Robertson], but Virgil van Dijk that’s just too arrogant.
“He tries to flick it around the corner to Andy Robertson instead of dealing with it. Maybe that comes from the fact that Leeds, a new team, maybe he thinks it’s a little too easy.
“But I tell you what, Patrick Bamford has had one chance through on goal and he’s been given a gift by that man [Van Dijk].”

It was a pretty poor defensive display from the Premier League champions, who will be pleased with the three points but will be asking a lot of questions about how they defended.
Jurgen Klopp will be well aware that his team simply cannot produce these types of displays this season because they won’t end up winning back-to-back titles.
Aside from Van Dijk’s mistake, it was a game full of entertainment and goals, with both teams showcasing their high-quality pressing game throughout.
