As ever, Liverpool have a massive task on their hands if they’re going to win the Premier League this season.

The Reds have to overthrow Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and after signing Erling Haaland, the reigning champions are heading into this season as firm title favourites.

However, Liverpool will once again put up a challenge and Jamie Carragher says he’s hanging onto the Reds’ title hopes because of two players – Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker.

What’s been said?

Carragher said that van Dijk and Alisson have him hanging onto Liverpool’s hopes of winning the title.

“I’m hanging onto a couple of things with Liverpool. Once Virgil van Dijk was up to speed last season, you got the first months out of the way. In the second half of the season him and the goalkeeper were absolutely what you would expect them to be. If you’re getting them at their best at the start of the season, every full season van Dijk has been at Liverpool they’ve gotten over 90 points,” Carragher said.

Unbeatable at their best

Carragher says that Alisson and van Dijk have him holding onto Liverpool’s title dreams, and he’s absolutely right to have that opinion.

When those two are on top form, Liverpool are genuinely impossible to beat.

Alisson is the finest goalkeeper in the Premier League at the moment, while van Dijk is an absolute behemoth at the back, and as we saw in the Community Shield, sometimes a defender like that is too much for even a striker like Erling Haaland.

Liverpool will have to play to an astounding level if they’re going to beat City to the title, but if they can keep Alisson and van Dijk fit, they’ll be very much in the mix once again.
