Speaking on the It’s a Funny Old Life Podcast, Jamie Carragher has been discussing Liverpool’s midfield and Naby Keita.

The pundit was discussing the Reds’ squad for next season, and he’d like to see a new player signed in the middle of the park.

Carragher has concerns about the age of Liverpool’s first-choice midfielders, while he’s also expressed his worries about Naby Keita’s injury record, stating that you can never fully trust Keita to be fit and available.

What’s been said?

Carragher spoke about Liverpool’s midfield.

“In the summer, I think the one position for me would be in that midfield. Look at our first-choice midfield now. You have Henderson, Fabinho and Thiago, they’re all around 30. Naby Keita did very well against Man City, but you can never fully trust him injury wise, Milner is older now, Oxlade-Chamberlain is probably going to move on, I think one more at around the 23, 24 age is what we need,” Carragher said.

Problem position

It’s hard to poke any holes in this Liverpool squad, but if you were to highlight any area for improvement right now, it would be the midfield.

The Reds are in a funny spot where their first-choice midfielders are getting old, and their young prospects are just a bit too young, with Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott still both quite wet behind the ears.

As Carragher says, Liverpool need someone around 23 or 24 years of age who can blend a bit of experience with long-term promise.

As for Keita, the sad reality is that he can’t be relied upon, and while he is a very talented player, putting all of your eggs in his basket is a dangerous game due to his patchy fitness record.
