Speaking to 90Min, Jamie Carragher has been discussing Liverpool’s title chances and Virgil van Dijk.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Carragher predicted that Liverpool will win the Premier League this season, claiming that the difference will be Virgil van Dijk’s impact from the start.

The Dutchman was one of the best defenders in the league last term, but Carragher believes that he wasn’t at his best for the entire campaign after recovering from his ACL injury.

The Sky pundit stated that van Dijk being at his best from the start of the campaign will give the Reds a real chance of winning the title this season.

What’s been said?

Carragher shared why he thinks Liverpool will win the league.

“There was a point between them last season and I think that in the second half of last season Liverpool were the better team, while City were better in the first half, and they built that lead up. I think a lot had to do with the fact that van Dijk wasn’t at his best in the first half of the season. I think van Dijk being at his best gives Liverpool a real chance, it really does,” Carragher said.

Sloppy start

Carragher believes that getting van Dijk back to his best will be the key to Liverpool’s potential title triumph this season, but he’s started rather sloppily this term.

Indeed, the Dutch defender was given the runaround by Aleksandar Mitrovic at the weekend, conceding a penalty and being Cruyff-turned in embarrassing fashion.

We’ve come to expect nothing short of perfection from van Dijk, but in his showing against Fulham he looked decidedly human.

If Liverpool are to win the league, van Dijk needs to be a lot sharper than he was at Craven Cottage on the opening day.
