Jürgen Klopp spent big to bring the midfielder to Liverpool in the summer.

Jamie Carragher stated that he expected a lot more from Naby Keita this season, when speaking exclusively to BT Sport, suggesting that Liverpool’s current formation doesn’t suit the Guinean.

The 24-year-old joined the Reds from RB Leipzig in the summer, for around £52.75 million according to the Independent, but he has flattered to deceive at Anfield, chalking up just one assist and zero goals in 24 appearances in all competitions.

Liverpool have been quite simply brilliant this season, but Keita has been one of the few disappointments for Jürgen Klopp.

The powerful midfielder is undoubtedly talented, but he isn’t the first expensive foreign import who has struggled to adapt to the ferocious pace of the Premier League.

Carragher spoke exclusively to BT Sport, and shared his theory why Keita hasn’t had things all his own way this season:

“Keita, there’s not doubt, we were expecting a bit more. What I don’t think has helped him has been the change in formation. We’ve now gone to 4-2-3-1, and he looks to me that he’s a player who plays in a three man midfield.”

There is a still a long way to go this season, and Keita could still have an important role to play for Liverpool.

Whether he turns out to be a hit at Anfield, however, remains to be seen.
