Jamie Carragher has told SkySports that he feels Lucas Leiva should not receive criticism after being exposed by Leicester City in their win over Liverpool last night.
The Reds were soundly beaten by Leicester, and Lucas was undone for the first goal as Jamie Vardy sprinted past him to slot home past Simon Mignolet.
Lucas once again lined up at centre-back, playing out of position as he has done frequently over the past 12 months.
Carragher told SkySports’ live coverage at half-time that it would miss the point to simply point the finger at the Brazilian for his part in the goal.
He said: “He’ll get criticism, but I feel sorry for Lucas, he shouldn’t be playing there.
“He hasn’t got the tool set, and if you continually play a player like that there he will get found out.”
Lucas is out of contract at the end of the season and his continual selection at centre-back speaks to a failure in transfer policy by Jurgen Klopp.
He elected not to sign another centre-back last month, and has now had three transfer windows at Anfield to bring in new players.
His fallout with Mamadou Sakho is potentially looking costly, with the Frenchman impressing for Crystal Palace this past weekend.
