Jamie Carragher says Darwin Nunez reminds him of former Liverpool icon

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has likened Darwin Nunez to Fernando Torres, with the Uruguay international beginning to find his feet at Anfield after a tricky start.

Speaking on CBS Soccer’s coverage of the UEFA Champions League, the pundit was full of praise for Nunez after Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Napoli, with the former Benfica star bagging the second and final goal of the evening for the Anfield side, with Carragher lauding the South American.

Nunez has had a mixed start to life in the Premier League since arriving at Liverpool for a club-record fee. However, the striker has ultimately done well, with the 23-year-old bagging seven goals in all competitions for the Reds. And for Carragher, the forward’s skillset reminds him of his former teammate Torres.

Indeed, the claim is quite a big one. But it’s also a statement that makes quite some sense, with Carragher saying: “It’s really interesting watching Nunez. He comes on and he makes a huge impact. He hasn’t set the world alight, he hasn’t done what Haaland’s done and people would’ve expected more for the price tag.

“But when you look at his minutes on the pitch and how many goals he’s scored per minute.., his numbers are actually scary! He’s actually made a huge impact. But there’s still something not quite there, where Jurgen Klopp’s going to play him every single game.”

Carragher then went on to compare Nunez to his former teammate Torres, with the pundit saying: “I think he’s got [similarities to] Fernando Torres. He’s got that power, physically, to knock defenders off. And that blistering pace. But at times, maybe technically, not the best in terms of general play.”

Nunez’s style of play has been viewed as unorthodox, yet the numbers don’t lie, and the striker is scoring at quite a strong rate as the youngster continues to get to grips with English football. And Carragher’s comparison to Anfield icon Torres is on the money.

Indeed, the former Spanish international was a menace for Liverpool during his time on Merseyside. And for Nunez, emulating the striker will be a sure-fire way to get supporters and critics on his side after a conflicting start to life with the Premier League giants.
