Jamie Carragher has waded into the Tony Pulis debate dominating West Bromwich Albion’s season with a word of warning about Aston Villa.
West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis
The Baggies have got off to a typically average start to the new Premier League campaign with four points from their opening four games.
But it is the relationship between Pulis and the club’s supporters which has stolen all the headlines so far.
A large section of fans at the Hawthorns have made it clear they are not happy with the style of play favoured by the no-nonsense Welshman.
But Pulis has defended his record at the club this week saying his remit was to keep the club in the Premier League and make a profit before adding ‘It’s been an interesting club to manage’.
Jamie Carragher during the press conference
Now former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football that he thinks West Brom fans should be careful what they wish for.
“I’m a big fan of Tony Pulis,” Carragher told MNF.
“I think what happens is that… you’re desperate for Tony Pulis – or Sam Allardyce – to come in and do a certain job.
“He does that job and then you think ‘Well ok maybe we can do something else now’ (and) he’s not that type of manager and he never will be that type of manager.
Carragher is a ‘big fan’ of Pulis
“Listen the supporters of their own club know their club better than I do, so I am talking standing back form it.
“I think Pulis is right, if you look at a club the size of Aston Villa – a much bigger club, no disrespect to West Brom (and) they’re in the Championship – Tony Pulis has kept them up and if you keep Tony Pulis as your manager you’ll stay up.”
Carragher went on to insist there was ‘no way’ the Baggies would be relegated under Pulis and asked supporters what more they realistically want in the increasingly competitive English top flight.
“Whether that’s enough for their supporters that’s down to them, I’m not a West Brom fan, but I can only look at it and see the job Tony Pulis is does and you’re guaranteed that Premier League money every year,” Carragher added.
Carragher says Aston Villa serve as a warning to disgruntled West Brom fans
West Brom host another club experiencing unrest this season in the shape of West Ham this Saturday.
Hammers supporters are at odds with the club’s owners over the way their much heralded move to the 60,000 seater Olympic Stadium has been handled.
It hasn’t helped that the East Londoners have lost three of their opening four games of the season and were also embarrassingly dumped out of Europe by Romanian minnows Astra Giurgiu recently.
Something has to give on Saturday.
