Carragher believes boos at Anfield signal a turning point for Slot after Tottenham draw

Arne Slot faces an uphill battle to reconnect with Liverpool supporters after audible boos followed Sunday’s draw with Tottenham at Anfield.

That’s the view of Jamie Carragher, who told Sky Sports that the Dutch coach now needs something “really special” to repair a relationship with fans that appears to be deteriorating quickly. Speaking ahead of Monday night’s Premier League action, Carragher hinted that pressure around Slot has reached a critical stage.

Carragher: Match-going fans have now turned on Slot

Carragher highlighted a clear distinction between online criticism and the backing Slot had continued to receive from fans inside the stadium — at least until recently.

“I think there’s always a difference between what you see online and the match-going fans,” he explained. “For much of this season, even when people were turning on Arne Slot, the fans at Anfield were still behind him.”

He pointed to moments earlier in the campaign as evidence, including support shown after the Mohamed Salah situation and chants for Slot during the trip to the San Siro. But, according to Carragher, Sunday marked a decisive shift.

“But yesterday felt different,” he added. “The boos at full-time were proper boos — that was a frustrated, unhappy fanbase. From here, it’s going to be really difficult for him to win them back.”

Carragher suggested only a major turnaround — such as a strong run or silverware — could change the mood. “He now needs something really special. Maybe a cup win or qualifying for the Champions League. But a lot of supporters have lost faith, especially after this past week.”

Analysis: Season drift leaves Slot with little margin

While Liverpool have endured worse results earlier in the season — including heavy home defeats to Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven in November — there was still belief at that stage that Slot could steady things.

Results have improved somewhat since then, but performances have remained inconsistent. The draw against Tottenham was another example of what has frustrated supporters: slow, uninspired football lacking intensity.

That style of play appears to be a key factor behind the growing dissatisfaction at Anfield.

Although Carragher acknowledged that a trophy could still shift the narrative, it currently feels unlikely. Even if Liverpool were to end the season with silverware, there is a sense that a reset may be inevitable.

Right now, the mood around the club suggests a team — and a manager — simply trying to reach the end of the campaign, with uncertainty hanging over what comes next.
