Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of advancing into the Champions League final later this month were dealt a colossal blow on Tuesday night as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Ajax in the first leg of their semi-final clash.

Having lost for the first time at their new stadium on Saturday, Spurs were hoping to hit back from the 1-0 defeat to West Ham United – but ended up losing 1-0 again.

Donny van de Beek’s first half goal was no more than Ajax deserved, as the Eredivisie side were dominant throughout the first half, playing beautiful football whilst showing unbelievable confidence on the road.

Spurs simply couldn’t get close to them in the first half, and whilst they improved in the second period, they couldn’t find the crucial goal to level the tie ahead of their trip to Amsterdam.

Ajax will now be hot favourites to reach the final, and claim another giantkilling having already knocked out Real Madrid and Juventus in the previous two rounds.

After the game, pundit Jamie Carragher took to Twitter to react to the result, claiming that Spurs are well in the tie after Ajax failed to find the second goal – though they came close through David Neres hitting the post..

Carragher added praise for Ajax duo Frenkie De Jong and Matthijs De Ligt, but also called ex-Manchester United defender Daley Blind ‘outstanding’ for his performance in the Ajax defence.
