Wolverhampton Wanderers smashed Everton 3-0 on Sunday afternoon, and Daniel Podence stole the show.

Wolves had lost to Arsenal and Everton heading into this game, and really needed to hit back with a strong performance.

They did just that, as Podence’s quick feet handed Wolves a first-half penalty, with Raul Jimenez unsurprisingly dispatched.

Leander Dendoncker headed in a second after the break, before Diogo Jota raced onto a sensational Ruben Neves pass to fire past Jordan Pickford.

The result bolsters Wolves’ hopes of a top four finish, though Manchester United will be favourites to overtake a stumbling Leicester City side.

Nuno gave a chance to Podence in yesterday’s game, with the Portuguese winger making his first league start for the club since joining from Olympiacos in January.

Podence clearly has quality, but has found it difficult to break into the Wolves side. Just hours before he started against Everton, The Mirror reported that Celtic had asked about taking Podence on loan for next season.

Signed for £17million in January, it would be a surprise to see Podence move out on loan any time soon – and pundit Jamie Carragher was hugely impressed with him on Sunday.

Speaking during Sky Sports’ coverage of the game (12/07, 1:50pm), Carragher suggested that Podence was the man of the match, praising him for causing problems and looking like the sharpest player on the pitch throughout – which may just leave Celtic feeling a deal is unlikely after all.

“He was the real bright spark of the first half, and at times at the start of the second half, he was still causing problems,” said Carragher. “He won that penalty, and right from minute one, he looked the sharpest player on the pitch,” he added.
