Jamie Carragher raves about £42.5m Tottenham transfer target

Jamie Carragher has praised Nottingham Forest talent Morgan Gibbs-White after impressing in the Premier League this season.

Carragher was speaking to Sky Sports on Monday night as he and Gary Neville handed out their season awards.

Erling Haaland understandably took the Player of the Year award having destroyed the Premier League.

That ruled him out from winning the Signing of the Season award though and Carragher changed his mind.

Having initially given the award to Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji, Carragher went for Morgan Gibbs-White instead.

Carragher stopped short of suggesting that Gibbs-White had kept Nottingham Forest up on his own, but felt that he was a key influence.

Forest struck a deal worth an enormous £42.5million to sign Gibbs-White from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer, a deal which raised more than a few eyebrows.

Carragher feels that Gibbs-White has justified the price tag though and now thinks he should be called up by England very soon.

“I wouldn’t say he has single-handedly kept Nottingham Forest in the league, but every time I watch him… he had a big price tag, there are a lot of eyes on him and I think he’s justified that,” said Carragher. “I think he must be really close to the England squad, I really do believe he should be in the next England squad,” he added.

Gibbs-White has now ended the season with five goals and seven assists in 34 Premier League games.

The 23-year-old has also racked up 64 key passes this season; only 11 players registered more in the Premier League.

Gibbs-White is proving himself as a creative midfielder who can come up with magic in the final third and carry the ball with real purpose.

The problem for Forest now is that other clubs are starting to sit up and take notice.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this month that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Gibbs-White.

Tottenham need homegrown talents and especially ones who can bring creativity and flair in the final third.

Gibbs-White certainly fits that bill and Tottenham may be tempted to make offers for the Forest star.

Yet having paid big money for Gibbs-White last summer – even if not all up front – Forest will be in a great position to price Tottenham out of a move and keep hold of Gibbs-White.
