Jamie Carragher predicts where Tottenham will finish, discusses Mourinho’s title chances

Jamie Carragher is confident Tottenham Hotspur will finish in the top four this season but believes a Premier League title challenge is beyond Jose Mourinho’s side at the moment, speaking to Sky Sports (26 October, 8pm).

It may seem an unremarkable scoreline on paper, but Monday night’s 1-0 win at Turf Moor is exactly the sort of result that often proves invaluable a few months down the line.

Spurs were a million miles from their free-flowing best in Lancashire with Heung Min-Son’s winner, set up once again by Harry Kane, the visitors’ first shot on target – and it only arrived in the 75th minute.

But they do say the hallmark of champions is to win when you’re playing badly.

Liverpool and Manchester City have stumbled out of the blocks this season, while Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea continue to flit from brilliant to miserable. This has led some pundits to suggest Mourinho could sneak through the back door and secure a fourth Premier League winners’ medal.

According to Carragher, however, Tottenham aren’t ready to clinch the title yet, even if standards appear to have dropped at the top of the table this season.

“I think Tottenham will finish in the top four. I can’t see them winning the title but it is a season where the points totals we’ve seen before will not (happen) this season,” Carragher explains.

“We’ve seen how many points City and Liverpool have dropped. So to win the title, could the Uniteds, the Tottenhams, actually get closer?”

Gary Neville agrees.

However, with that 6-1 shellacking of United still fresh in his mind, the Old Trafford legend has performed a U-turn on Tottenham’s Champions League credentials.

“I don’t think they will win the title, I agree (with Jamie),” Neville says. “I do think they’ll finish in the top four. I didn’t think that at the start of the season but I’ve changed my mind.”

Tottenham will certainly need to perform better than they did at Burnley if they are to challenge for silverware.

If it wasn’t for a brilliant Harry Kane goal-line clearance at one end and an inspired assist at the other, Spurs would have dropped points for a second successive game following the extraordinary 3-3 draw with West Ham.
