Jamie Carragher says Alisson Becker made ‘some great saves’ during Liverpool’s Champions League exit to Real Madrid on Wednesday night, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (15/03/23 at 10:25 pm).

The Anfield legend added that Alisson ‘kept Liverpool in it’ before Karim Benzema scored the only goal of the game to hand Carlo Ancelotti’s side a 6-2 aggregate win over Jurgen Klopp’s men.

The Reds went to the Santiago Bernabeu hoping for an unlikely Madrid miracle, but they left Spain further deflated and without scoring against the team that beat them in the Champions League final last season.

Only 12 months ago, Liverpool were pushing for all four trophies, and in truth, they were only 180 minutes away (final v Madrid and final game of the season) from doing the unthinkable.

But fast forward to the present, it has left many surprised that the drop-off from Liverpool, especially in comparison to Real Madrid, who are just going from strength to strength.

Nonetheless, this was Carragher’s brief words on Alisson Becker, before he went in on a certain Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“Alisson, he kept Liverpool in it,” said Carragher. “He made some great saves.

“From my point of view, I knew the game was gone. I just wanted to Liverpool to not lose the game and maybe nick the game 1-0. And have a slight feel-good factor.”

ALISSON IS A BRIGHT SPARK THIS SEASON

There aren’t many Liverpool players that can hold their heads up this season, but Alisson is certainly one of them and the £150k-a-week star (Spotrac) will probably win the club’s Player of the Year at the end of the campaign.

It probably says a lot that the Brazil star has been the club’s most consistent performer because it has resulted in them ending the season without a trophy.

But perhaps Liverpool will have one more fight in them and they will secure fourth spot at the end of the season, which would be a big sigh of relief given the type of season those on Merseyside have had.
